Michael Kirk Lane was born and raised in Fenton, Michigan (a suburb of Flint.) He began his acting career as Ringmaster for the Kindergarten Circus while attending West Shore Elementary.  No one could say “ Ladies and Zentlemen prezenting da Circuz” quite like him.

More recently MKL is known as a two time MAC Award nominee, having found a home in the New York Cabaret community. He spent 3.5 years as a Singing Waiter, Manager and Host of his own open mic "The Show Tune Room" at Don't Tell Mama. While at DTM he produced his first solo Cabaret “Songs from The Rock, The Street, and The ‘Hood” which featured songs from Fraggle Rock, Sesame Street, and Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood

He now serves as House Manager at The Laurie Beechman Theatre where his second solo show  “Now You Know” debuted in April 2015.

He has also recently been seen in readings of the in development musicals "Plagued", "The House in Beverly Hills" "How to Marry a Divorced Man" "Apathy: The  Gen X Musical" and “Hell’s Belles”

MKL spent many years as a Resident Artist at Flint Youth Theatre, where he was a student as a child, teaching in the Drama School and performing in Signature Series and Off the Press shows.  Michael returned to Flint in 2013 to portray Simon Stimson in “Our Town” which was the final production of the outgoing artistic team who had been at the theatre for nearly 30 years. Beyond his work with FYT,  MKL has taught in Detroit Public Schools, with The Childrens' Theatre Network, Detroit Catholic Central, and Siena Heights Creative Stages Program. MKL continues his teaching having worked in New York with Rosie’s Theatre Kids ,Theatre Development Fund and continues to teach throughout the city and into New Jersey with Wingspan Arts.

Having loved puppetry his entire life, MKL is thrilled to be the Associate Producer for No Strings Productions.  This company, founded by Michael K Frith and Kathy Mullen, makes puppet films for children in troubled areas of the world.  Past films include: Trauma Healing and Peace Building for Syrian Refugees, Public Health for Haiti, HIV/AIDS Awarness for Africa and many more.  The films continue to be dubbed into new languages and continue to educate and inform children throughout the world.  Michael has been with No Strings since 2008.

MKL attended Siena Heights University and holds a BA in Theater/Speech Communication and a minor in Musical Theatre (just in case that major didn’t work out.)  While at SHU, MKL’s favorite roles included: Pippin in Pippin, Pseudolus in …Forum, the Andy Paris roles in The  Laramie Project, and Joey in Tony N' Tina's Wedding.

While in college, MKL began performing at what is still one of his favorite theatres, The Historic Croswell Opera House.  He’s glad to have signed the walls of this theatre among all of the performers, including Edwin Booth, who have graced its stage since opening in 1866. Favorite Croswell roles include: Jimmy in Thoroughly Modern Millie, Huck in Big River, and Horton in Seussical.

In September 2008 he loaded up in a van with 7 other crazy kids and set out on Theatreworks USA’s First National Tour of Joe Iconis’ The Plant that Ate Dirty Socks.  Michael performed the title role of the plants, did the puppetry and singing along from beneath a small box, and lifted many heavy objects; he always enjoyed the confused looks on the children’s faces when he appeared from behind the plants during curtain call

What’s next for MKL?

Stay tuned to find out.
