Michael Kirk Lane was born and raised in Fenton, Michigan (a suburb of Flint.) He began his acting career as Ringmaster for the Kindergarten Circus while attending West Shore Elementary. No one could say “ Ladies and Zentlemen prezenting da Circuz” quite like him.
More recently MKL is known as a three time MAC Award nominee, having found a home in the New York Cabaret community. He was also the winner of the 2018 BroadwayWorld Cabaret award for Best Cabaret Show. He has produced 5 solo solo cabaret shows, with numerous runs each in New York City, and has toured versions of those shows back to his home state. In the cabaret world he was also a long time manager at Don't Tell Mama and now serves as House Manager at The Laurie Beechman Theatre. Lane has also performed alongside both Leslie Carrara-Rudolph and Ginger Minj.
Lane was seen Off-Broadway in the cast of “Hell’s Belles”, and had appeared in developmental readings and demo recordings for many musicals, including readings at The York Theatre, The Dramatist , Jerry Orbach Theatre, and other venues throughout the city.
Having loved puppetry his entire life, MKL is thrilled to be the Associate Producer for No Strings Productions. This company, founded by Michael K Frith and Kathy Mullen, makes puppet films for children in troubled areas of the world. Past films include: Trauma Healing and Peace Building for Syrian Refugees, Public Health for Haiti, HIV/AIDS Awarness for Africa and many more. The films continue to be dubbed into new languages and continue to educate and inform children throughout the world. Michael has been with No Strings since 2008. Lane is also part of the voice cast for the children’s youtube series The Flying Tent, which is also being used to teach English in schools in the Middle East.
As a teaching artist, Lane currently teaches for Wingspan Arts and at the 92Y. He spent many years as a Resident Artist at Flint Youth Theatre, where he was a student as a child, teaching in the Drama School and performing in Signature Series and Off the Press shows. He has also taught MKLin Detroit Public Schools, with The Childrens' Theatre Network, Detroit Catholic Central, and Siena Heights Creative Stages Program..
